The tragedy in a London high rise apartment building shocked the world when at least 30 people were killed in a fire. According to one news report, dozens more people are still missing. Grenfell Tower, the 120-unit apartment building that burned, was home to approximately 600 people.
The fire occurred in the west London neighborhood of North Kensington, and some have suggested the deaths could rise as high as 100 once investigators have completed their search efforts.
The fire required 200 firefighters to get the blaze under control, and it took 24 hours for crews to put out the last of the fire. Several residents jumped from the tower in desperation when they were left with no way to exit the building. In some cases, rescuers were forced to catch children who were thrown from windows by terrified parents.
Some who have spoken to the press have speculated that the building didn’t attract attention for potential safety hazards because most of the residents were poor. One report states that a tenant group in the building had raised concerns for years without results.

The British press has also reported that hundreds of protesters have gathered to demand justice after the fire. Protesters have also filled local town halls, demanding answers.
