PHILADELPHIA, PA – A driver died in a crash after losing control of his vehicle in the Summerdale neighborhood of Philadelphia Saturday night, Fox 29 reports.
The incident happened in the southbound lanes of Roosevelt Boulevard near Fillmore Terrace at about 10 p.m. Witnesses reported that the driver was weaving in and out of traffic when the vehicle crossed over a median and struck a concrete bridge barrier.
The car flipped over a wall and then plunged down an embankment before landing on its roof in a ravine. The 54-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not yet released his identity. No one else was hurt in the crash.
Philadelphia police are investigating the accident. There is no word yet on what caused the driver to lose control.
Dangerous Philadelphia intersections
Serious accidents have been all too commonplace on Roosevelt Boulevard, which has earned a reputation as Philadelphia’s most dangerous street. Statistics released by Streetblog USA in 2018 indicated that Roosevelt had been the scene of 13 percent of all traffic deaths in Philadelphia in the previous five years, adding that drivers on the street frequently ignore the 45 mile an hour speed limit. In a listing of the city’s 12 most dangerous intersections for pedestrians compiled by the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, the intersection of Cottman Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard was fourth on the list, with 16 crashes between 2009 and 20013. In August, WCAU reported that 32 speed cameras were being installed at eight dangerous Roosevelt Boulevard intersections:
- Roosevelt Boulevard at Banks Way
- Roosevelt Boulevard at Deveraux Street
- Roosevelt Boulevard at F Street
- Roosevelt Boulevard at Grant Avenue
- Roosevelt Boulevard at Harbison Avenue
- Roosevelt Boulevard at Red Lion Road
- Roosevelt Boulevard at Strahle Street
- Roosevelt Boulevard at Southampton Road
