PHILADELPHIA, PA – Authorities are expanding their search for the driver of a large pickup truck that struck and killed a woman in the Juniata neighborhood last month.
According to ABC 6, Maria Rivera was walking in the intersection of Erie Avenue and I Street at 11:30 p.m. on September 18 when a dark Dodge Ram 1500 fatally struck the 46-year-old woman. The vehicle did not stop.
No physical evidence was left at the collision scene, leaving investigators to ask the public if they have any information that could lead to an arrest. The vehicle in question is described as dark quad cab with dark paint, chrome wheels, and a chrome tool box in the trunk. It is believed to be a work truck.
“She was full of life and they just took that from her,” Rivera’s daughter, Mariana Otero, told reporters.
Dangerous Philadelphia intersections
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, roughly 40% of the nearly 6 million car accidents that occurred in the United States in 2008 happened in intersections. As their report on the issue noted, the nature of intersections—in which vehicles traveling in multiple directions meet and are likely to turn into one another’s paths—makes them a high risk for collisions. And in dense cities like Philadelphia, these crashes are particularly common — and can be particularly devastating.
The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia produced a list of the most dangerous intersections in Philadelphia for pedestrians based on crash statistics from 2009 to 2013. Here are their findings, along with the number of crashes that occurred in those intersections within the four-year window:
- Fifth Street and Olney Avenue (19)
- Broad Street and Race Street (17)
- Broad Street and Girard Avenue (16)
- Cottman Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard (16)
- Broad Street and Olney Avenue (16)
- Broad Street and Lehigh Avenue (16)
- Market Street and 40th Street (15)
- Market Street and 11th Street (14)
- Chelten Avenue and Wayne Avenue (13)
- Market Street and 12th Street (13)
- Cobbs Creek, Market Street, and 63rd Street (13)
- Cecil B. Moore Avenue and Broad Street (13)
