QUAKERTOWN, PA – Police say a man was struck and killed Thursday morning in an accident that caused extensive delays on the Pennsylvania Turnpike’s northeast extension, Fox 29 reports.

Authorities responded to the scene at the 46.6 mile marker just past the Quakertown exit at about 4:30 a.m. Investigators said the man was struck by several cars and was pronounced dead at the scene. He had been walking in and out of traffic when he was hit, according to state troopers. The victim has not yet been identified.

The northbound lanes of I-476 were shut down between Quakertown and Lehigh Valley while the accident was being investigated and the scene was being cleared. Drivers heading north were using Route 309 and Route 611 as alternates to avoid the turnpike backups. The roadway reopened at about 10 a.m.

Anyone with further information on the crash or the man’s identity was asked to contact the Pennsylvania State Police Fogelsville Barracks.

Dangerous Philadelphia intersections

A report by the Governors Highway Safety Association said Pennsylvania had a 41 percent increase in the number of pedestrian fatalities in the first six months of 2018 over the same period the previous year, according to TribLIVE. And in Philadelphia, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia says pedestrians make up a third of the 90 to 100 city residents who die in traffic crashes each year.   Many pedestrian accidents occur when people try to cross busy roads where motorists are not expecting them to cross, one reason why so many Philadelphia intersections are so dangerous.  The BCGP found that Intersection design is a contributing factor in 43% of fatal crashes in Philadelphia. It issued several recommendations to improve pedestrian safety, including a policy of designing streets with the safety of all users as the primary goal rather than speed or convenience of automobiles.
