PHILADELPHIA, PA – A 20-year-old driver was killed when his car crashed in Philadelphia’s Center City early Friday morning, according to Fox 29.

Police said the driver of a Volkswagen Jetta was speeding on Vine Street just before 4:30 a.m. and lost control while swerving to avoid traffic cones that were set up in the outer lanes of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

The vehicle hit a center median, went across the inbound lanes of the parkway, and then struck a tree and a pole near 20th Street, according to investigators. The driver died of his injuries at Jefferson Hospital. One of the three passengers in the car needed medical attention but was not seriously injured, authorities said.

The crash caused traffic delays on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway during the morning rush hour.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
